about

Initially featured on the compilation "Crushing Intolerance Volume 5"

Vacuum was written as a treatise on the horrors of war following an American bombing in Syria. The goal was to show not only the indifference of man towards itself, but also the indifference man towards the earth and the universe. The recording of Thrall's reading of this piece was done just prior to the band's inaugural performance, and also functioned as the introduction to that performance.

-Thrall

Recording Vacuum was a strange process for me. Before Thrall had even approached me with the writing that Vacuum is centered around, I was feeling some deep terror about the world we live in, due to the same bombing that Thrall mentions and a number of other current events. Near the time of recording, the city I live in had an emergency alert test which I ended up recording and became a recording I used for this piece. Vacuum encompasses both sorrow and anxiety for me.

lyrics

One day I woke to a split in the sky.
First the sound, a tearing and a sigh.
Then blue opened into red
which opened into Black.

That last sunrise would be dramatic, wouldn't it?
Like it knew it was a poem.

I thought it would be fast
But of course,
The universe, in it's infinite sense of humor,
Let us ruminate on it.

The world ended slow,
A lot of sweat and grimace,
A lot of vibration and sudden clarity.
And then blood.

Even at the end we had our plans
And even at the end the universe
still
didn't
give
a
fuck.

Strange, to be used to this apocalypse.
A whistle, a hiss, a crack,
A pinch and a slump
And I shuffle along with the rest.
